George Washington Ivey, my 2nd great-grandfather

George Ivey was born the oldest child of Sterling Pate Ivey and the only child of Susan Myrick, Sterling's first wife, in 1821 in Warren County, Georgia. He had 11 half-siblings (4 sisters and 7 brothers).

He married Martha Eunice Myrick Smith in 1842 (he may have been her 2nd husband). They had at least 7 children together, 5 boys and 2 girls, over a period of 18 years. He was 39 years old when his youngest child was born.

He served as a Confederate Soldier in Company E, 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry.

He died on 29 Apr 1865, 20 days after General Lee surrendered to General Grant. He was 43 years old, leaving behind a widow and two children at home.

Martha Ivey, my 2nd great-grandmother

Martha Ivey was born in 1822, probably in Georgia. The earliest record for her is for a marriage in Warren County in 1842 to George Washington Ivey. This may have been her second marriage. They had 5 boys and 2 girls. George died 4 years after the birth of their youngest daughter.

She lived in Warren County until her death in 1883 at the age of 61.

Carrie Ivey, my paternal grandmother

Carrie Greene was born in 1892, the year Ellis Island opened in New York Harbor for European immigrants. Her father, Joseph Greene, was a farmer, and her mother, Sarah Smith, was a housewife. Both Joseph and Sarah probably came from slave owning families. Carrie was the second born, the oldest daughter, and had 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

At age 16, she married Osmer Ivey from the neighboring county, settling in Hancock County for about 10 years, then moving to Baldwin County with their 4 oldest living children. They had 13 children in all, 7 boys and 6 girls. The oldest daughter, Roberta, died when she was 5 years old. Osmer and Carrie owned and operated a dairy farm in Milledgeville. The majority of their children lived nearby and operated farms as well, and most of their grandchildren still live in Milledgeville and the surrounding area.

She died in 1983 at the age of 90, 15 years after her husband had passed away.

Drucilla Ivey, my great-grandmother

My paternal grandmother, Drucilla McCrary, was born in 1847. She was the youngest of Jasper McCrary's 10 children, and the youngest of five born to Drucilla Wood McCrary, Jasper's second wife. She had 4 sisters, 1 brother, and at least 3 half-sisters, and 1 half-brother.

Born and raised in Warren County, she married Matthew Ivey, also from Warren County, when she was 19 years old. Together they had 3 girls and 4 boys over an 18 year span. Matthew was a farmer and she took care of the home. Probably after her husband died in 1915, she lived with her youngest daughter, Mae, and her family until she died in 1930. She lived to be 82 years old.

Osmer Ivey, my grandfather

Osmer Ivey, my paternal grandfather, was born in 1883 in Warren County, Georgia, during a time when electricity was just being introduced to Atlanta (about 100 miles to the northwest) and the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was under scrutiny by the Supreme Court. He was the youngest son, the sixth of seven children born to Matthew and Drucilla Ivey, and was raised as a farmer.

He married 16 year old Carrie Greene from Hancock County, and they had 13 children together (7 boys and 6 girls). They lived in Hancock County for almost 10 years, then moved to Baldwin County with their 4 oldest living children. Their second child, Roberta, died at age 5, in 1916. He worked at Georgia State Sanitorium for a time but mainly worked as a dairy farmer.

When he died in 1968 from cancer at age 84, almost all of his children lived nearby, all having homes, farms and families of their own. He outlived his brothers and sisters, except his youngest sister, Mae, who died 8 years later. His loving and faithful wife, Carrie, lived for another 15 years.
