Osmer Elroid Ivey, Sr (1883-1968)

Generation 6
Son of Matthew Harris Ivey & Drucilla Evans McCrary
Husband of Carrie Smith Greene

Osmer Elroid "Osmer Ivey" IVEY Sr was born on 29 Sep 1883 in Warrenton, Warren, Georgia as the sixth child of Matthew Harris Ivey and Drucilla Evans McCRARY. He had six siblings, namely: Minnie Anderson, Jasper Washington "Bud" Sr, Olivia Amelia L "Liv", Orlanda Mathew "Lan", Nevil Cohen "Ne", and Mary Eunice "Mae".

TIMELINE

30 Jun 1900

Osmer E IVEY lived in Militia Districts 157, 159, Elim, Barnett, Warren, Georgia in 1900. He was about 17 years old, living on a farm with his parents, Matthew H Ivey and Drucilla E Ivey, along with 3 of his siblings: Olivia A Ivey, Nevil C Ivey, and Mary E Ivey.

10 Apr 1909

When he was 25, he married Carrie Smith GREENE, daughter of Joseph Edward GREENE and Sarah Florence SMITH, on 10 Apr 1909 in Sparta, Hancock, Georgia.

3 Sep 1909

One of my cousins found a newpaper article dated 3 Sep 1909 from the Milledgeville News. The title of the article is "Sanitarium Employees Write a Public Card of Thanks to Hon. Carl Vinson". Hon. Vinson made a promise to secure an increase of appropriation for the support and maintenance of the Georgia State Sanitarium, and was supportive of the defense of the reputation of the institution, and to "refute the slanders directed against them", the meagerly paid men who gave their lives for their work. O. E. Ivey is listed as one of the employees.

26 Apr 1910

Osmer Ivey lived in Militia District 101, Hancock, Georgia in 1910 with his wife Carry Ivey. No other household members are listed. He was 26 years old and listed as a "general farmer", but not working on his own. The column on the census record is filled in as "Emp", so that could be either employer or employee.

Almost all of the neighbors are large black families (all farmers or farm laborers). Other neighbors are Alonza & Vallie Butts.

12 Sep 1918

In 1918, Osmer Ellroyd Ivey is listed on his WWI Draft Card with a residence of Hardwick, Baldwin, Georgia with his wife, Mrs. Carrie Smith Ivey. His occupation is listed as "nurse" at the Georgia State Sanitorium in Hardwick. I asked my mother about it and she said she never knew he worked as a nurse at the State hospital. But his employment at the state hospital is corroborated by the newspaper article.

39 Sep 1919

A newspaper ad was found by one of my cousins, from 1919 in the Union-Recorder, advertising "sweet milk" from "fine Jersey cows". O.E. Ivey is listed as the manager, Lural Dairy.

2 Jan 1920

At the age of 35, Osmar Inez was counted in the census in 1920 in Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia. Living with his wife, Carrie Inez, and 4 of his children: Julian Inez, Edna Inez, Malcom Inez, and William Inez. It also records he owned his own home, free of mortgage, and was a general farmer.

Surnames of neighbors: Nesbit, Richardson, Adams, Moore.

17 Apr 1930

Osm* Ivey was counted in the census in 1930 in Meriwether, Baldwin, Georgia. At 48 years old, married to Carrie S Ivey. Eleven of his children are living in his household (Julian, Edner, Malcom, William, James, Marry, O E, Drucilla, Robert, Joe, and "Living". He is recorded as a general farmer, and not a veteran of US Military or Naval forces.

Surnames of neighbors: Bowdoin, Halman, and Busby.

1935

Osmer Ivey (57 years old) and Carrie Ivey lived in the Militia District 318, Baldwin, Georgia as recorded in the 1940 census.

4 Apr 1940

NAME SPELLING VARIANTS

My grandfather's middle name is spelled different ways in a variety of records that I have found. I have seen Osmer E Ivey Sr, Osmer E Ivey Jr, and Julian E Ivey's middle name spelled different ways....  Elrod / Elroid / Elroyd.  It is spelled Elroyd on the Moore's funeral home information sheets, but the O.E. (Jr) grave marker says "Elrod". Osmer Sr's draft applications has "Ellroyd". I have asked several family members, and so far no one knows what the correct spelling is. I grew up thinking his middle named was spelled "Elroid", so for the most part, that is how I have spelled his name.

MILITARY

We have not been able to find any records of military service for our grandfather. Other than the WWI Draft Card and the notation on the 1930 census record that he was not a US military veteran.

HOME PLACE

This is a photo of the Ivey family homeplace where Osmer & Carrie (Papa/Pop & Nanny) lived. All of the grandchildren have fond memories of visiting them there and swinging in the wooden bench swing on the front porch, hearing the screen door squeak when it opened and closed. The homeplace was torn down a long time ago, but it will never be forgotten.
