George Washington Ivey was born on 28 Dec 1821 in Warren County, Georgia as the first son of Sterling Pate Ivey and only child of Susan Myric. He had at least 11 half-siblings (their mother was Sarah "Sallie" Manning), namely: Susan Myric Ivey, Nancy H. Ivey, Dr. James "Thomas" Ivey, Benjamin Franklin Ivey, Sterling M. Ivey, Stokes Francis Ivey, Sarah Ivey, Robert H Ivey, Mary Marietta G.V.B. Ivey, Adam Abraham Ivey, and Alonzo Ivey.


TIMELINE

13 Jan 1842

At about the age of 20, George W. Ivey married Martha W. Smith (parents unknown) in Warren County, Georgia. They had at least 7 children together.

1849

There is a record for a G.W. Ivy in the Heath District, Warren County, Georgia. It lists 2 slaves. The last columns state $12.18 and 4-1/4 mills. Other Ivy's listed on the same page are: William Ivy, Martha Ivy, Adam Ivy, Benjamin Ivy, Jr., and Benjamin Ivy, Sr.

16 Sep 1850

In the 1850 census record, George W Avy is living with his wife, Martha E Avy, and their two oldest children, Matthew A Avy and Mary F Avy, in Division 90, Warren County, Georgia. George and Martha are 28 years old, Matthew is 7 and Mary is 4. The census records hi as a Farmer, born in Georgia. Nearby families are Robert & Martha Humphrey, Asa and Susan McCrary, William and Frances Johnson, Quetavus and Bethina Hammock, and John and Elizabeth Bishop.

21 Jun 1860

At about the age of 38, George W and Martha Ivy are living in Goose Ponds District, Warrenton, Warren County, Georgia. Aso living in the household are Mary (age 13), James (age 10), John (age 6), Washington (age 4), and George (age 1). He is recorded as a farmer with real estate value of 2,000 and personal estate value of 8,440. 

Neighbors are James and Margaret Gum, Francis and Frances Smith, Thomas and Mary Veazy, 

Relatives living nearby are a cousin, Benjamin H Ivey (son of Thomas Pate Ivey and Sancil Burkhalter) with his wife Mary, with their two children; their cousin's wife, Sarah McDaniel Ivey (possibly a widow of Benjamin Ivey), and her mother Mary Harbuck McDaniel, along with 2 of her children; and another cousin, Martha Ivy. Also living close by is an uncle, Adam Ivey (b. abt 1787 in Virginia) at age 74. Next door to Adam is another cousin, Albert Crawford Ivey with his wife Martha Brown Smith Ivey and 6 of their children.

George W Ivy is enumerated in the Non-Population Schedule for Goose Pond, Warren County, Georgia. Acres of Land: 80, 270; Cash Value of Farm: 2000; Value of Farming, ?, and Machinery: 40; Horses: 2, Asses and Mules: 1; Milk Cows: 5; Working Oxen: 2; Other Cattle: 7; ?: 13; ?: 30; Value of Livestock: 665; [The headings of the other columns are unreadable].

1862

Records indicate he enlisted in Company E, 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry as a Private. This is confirmed by his inscription on his grave marker.

29 Apr 1865


George Washington Ivey died on 29 Apr 1865 and was buried in the Ivey Confederate Cemetery in Warrenton, Georgia.

It is possible that he died in the Civil War. According to the obituary of his father, Sterling, found at P. 434; Cemeteries & Genealogy, Warren County, Georgia and Immediate Vicinity 1792 - 1987; Daniel Nathan Crumpton, Sterling lost 4 sons in the war. Two of the others may have been Benjamin Franklin Ivey and Sterling M Ivey. It has not been determined who the 4th one is.




CHILDREN

George Washington Ivey and Martha Eunice Myrick Smith had the following children:

1. Matthew Harris Ivey was born 20 Jan 1843 in Warren, Georgia. He died on died on 14 Jan 1915 in Warren County. He married Drucilla Evans McCrary on 17 Jan 1867 in Warren County.

2. Mary Frances "Fannie" Ivey was born on 1 Jul 1846 in Warren County. She died on 14 Aug 1920 in Warren County. She married James A. Allen on 5 Nov 1865 in Warren County.

3. James Thomas Ivey was born on 6 Jun 1850 in Warren County. He died on 4 Jul 1927 in Warren County. He married Louise Victoria "Exie" Heath on 31 Jan 1878 in Warren County.

4. John William Ivey Sr was born on 1 Mar 1853 in Warren County. He died on 5 Jan 1936 in Fulton County. He married twice, 1st: Mary Newton Ivey on 21 Nov 1878 in Warren County; 2nd: Mary F. Veazey on 3 Mar 1907 in Morgan County, Georgia.

5. Washington Sterling Ivey was born on 10 Dec 1855 in Warren County. He died on 13 Jan 1938 in Warren County. He married Pheriby Uthenia "Tennie" Pate on 16 Feb 1879 in Warren County.

6. George Franklin Ivey was born on 24 Nov 1858 in Warren County. He died on 1 Aug 1953 in Hancock County. He married Della Ophelia Beckham/Beckum on Oct 1888 in Hancock County.

7. Eunice T.B. Ivey was born on 24 May 1861 in Warren County. She may have died in 1938 in North Carolina. She married Sgt. Benjamin T. Ivey on 21 Dec 1879 in Warren County.

?. The 1870 census of Martha Eunice Myrick Smith Ivey lists a 15 year old son, named Sterling Ivy, in addition to Washington Ivy, age 12. There are no further records for Sterling, so it is not known if he died young, or if he married and moved away. Further research is needed to determine these unknowns.
